Electric vehicle supporters say the cars provide environmental benefits to everyone in the community by reducing fossil fuel use.  A new partnership is promoting plug in car use.
Ann Arbor is already known as an electric vehicle hot spot in Michigan, and the new Drive Electric Ann Arbor Partnership hopes to make it easier to use the cars. The Ecology Center, D-T-E Energy, the University of Michigan, and the city of Ann Arbor are some of the organizations involved in the effort.

Charles Griffith is with the Ecology Center. He says adding more locations to recharge electric vehicles is an important step to increasing their numbers. "We'd like to get for example work places more involved in charging infrastructure so that people that may commute from their home to work have the opportunity to charge during the day when it's sitting idle out in the parking lot," Griffith says.

The partnership created a new page for the city's A2 Energy website providing information on charging locations, benefits and other facts about electric vehicles. Over 20 electric vehicle owners will have their cars at Briarwood Mall tomorrow to give curious motorists the chance for a test drive or ride as part of National Drive Electric Week.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
