A panel of state budget experts anticipates a $300 million windfall left over from the last fiscal year.
Paying down debt, fixing roads, and helping Flint with the water crisis have all been mentioned. State Budget Director John Roberts says any and all of those are possibilities. He also says Governor Rick Snyder will propose an emergency appropriation for Flint in the next week or two. “There’s a lot of experts right now sitting in rooms trying to figure out what we need in the interim and what we can do to help.”
The city’s water system was damaged after a succession of state-appointed emergency managers carried out a plan to use the Flint River for drinking water. The corrosive river water caused lead in old pipes to leach into drinking water.
