Republicans have controlled the House since 2010. A five-seat swing would be needed for Democrats to gain a majority there. The GOP holds a 59-50 edge.

In the Senate, Democrats hope to chip away at the Republicans' 26-to-12 margin.   Some of the most contentious primary races feature Republican incumbents facing challenges from conservatives unhappy over the Legislature's decision to expand Michigan's Medicaid program under the federal health care law.
