Thousands of students gathered at the University of Michigan's Diag for a rally and march to protest white supremacy.
Reverend Jesse Jacksonsurprised students by taking part in the rally before speaking at a symposium at the University of Michigan. The group, Students for Justice, is demanding better resources for minority students such as financial aid and protection from racial harassment.
Student leader Vikrant Garg also wants U-M to become a sanctuary campus.
"That would be to increase safety and protection and legal services for undocumented students."
Jackson encouraged students to keep fighting for human rights.
"We will not go backwards into isolation, we're going forward."
The students then marched inside of several campus buildings to let their voices be heard. Joseph Crowley was among them.
"I feel way more comfortable expressing my opinion when there are other students on campus doing that."
Students also want the university to offer race-based educational workshops on campus.
Reverend Jesse Jackson was in town because the University of Michigan held a symposium in his honor called "50 Years of Civil Rights Leadership."
