Soapbox Summer - Catherine McClary

Catherine McClary is running for re-election to the position of Treasurer for Washtenaw County.  This is her WEMU "Soapbox Summer" submission.

Hello – I am Catherine McClary asking for your vote for re-election to the Office of Washtenaw County Treasurer. The County Treasurer receipts, deposits, and accounts for all money coming into and going out of the County amounting to $1 Billion each year. I manage the County’s investment portfolio, collect delinquent real property taxes, and issue delinquent tax Notes. I prevent tax foreclosure.

I have an exemplary track record handling the County’s money with prudence and integrity. The programs I developed to prevent tax foreclosure have been used as a model for the rest of the State.

I am asking the voters to re-elect me as County Treasurer so that I can continue providing strategic leadership to safeguard public funds and prevent foreclosure. Treasury management has become increasingly more complex due to changes in banking laws, SEC regulations, financial markets, and technological advances, but I have led the County in adapting effectively. I work with a number of state-wide organizations providing professional education for treasurers and finance officers. I begin serving as the President of the Michigan Government Finance Officers Association in September.

My staff is dedicated and experienced. We make incremental improvements each year to prevent foreclosure and to educate homeowners. Tax foreclosures decreased significantly this year and the number of properties in danger of foreclosure next year are at the lowest level since 2002, which is very good news. If you, or your neighbor, are facing property tax difficulties, please call or e-mail my Office. Competent, compassionate staff will assist you with payment programs, grant and loan funds, and community resources.

Thank you for your vote. I am honored to serve as County Treasurer and protect the County’s money. Catherine McClary
