Sunday Wilde: A Musical Force

Sunday Wilde

Sunday Wilde’s new CD, He Gave Me A Blue Nightgown was just perfect for a Friday premiere on WEMU when we play it a little loose and fun getting ready for the weekend

There is a relaxed, loose, spontaneous and genuine mindset from blues pianist Sunday Wilde and her supporting musicians throughout He Gave Me A Blue Nightgown. The live recording was made at The Brangh’s Seine River Lodge in Atikokan, Ontario which is in the northern Canadian wilderness – Ms. Wilde’s native turf. Another reason this music sounds so natural is that Sunday Wilde is a self-taught pianist, singer and songwriter.

Her songs draw from her life experiences: crazy love, human foibles, grief, barroom tussles and the wisdom that only comes from making multiple mistakes. However, there are no mistakes made with the musicians who accompany Ms. Wilde on He Gave Me A Blue Nightgown. Guitarist David West and bassist Rory Slater lay down an insistent rhythm track for Sunday’s percussive boogie-woogie laden piano and plaintive voice. This voice is not studied or forced. Her slides, slurs, moans and wails are as authentic as those of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Buffy Sainte-Marie or June Carter Cash.

Sunday Wilde is musical force of nature…and it’s not nice to mess with mother nature. Sunday Wilde is a woman of substance and depth that comes from reckoning with life.

Linda Yohn simply cannot remember a day in her life that was not filled with music. Her early life was full of changes as the daughter of a well-respected cancer research scientist who moved his family about, but one thing was constant: the love of music instilled by her mother. So, when it seemed life was too hard to bear, young Linda would listen to her radio, play her guitar, dance her heart out and sing at the top of her lungs. So, it isn’t so strange that “older” Linda still does all those things!
