Washtenaw County Health Officials Address The Fears, Concerns, & Impact Of Coronavirus

US State Department

Testing for the coronavirus, now also being referred to as “COVID-19,” continues in Michigan at the state level, and so far, there are no confirmed cases.

Swabs can be taken by your local health provider, and test results are available in four to five hours.

Susan Cerniglia of the Washtenaw County Health Department says fever, cough, and shortness of breath are the symptoms of the Coronavirus they are most concerned about, impacting older adults more than younger adults or children.

Cerniglia advises people to take “appropriate and calm” steps to be prepared in case of possible quarantine.

“Not necessarily being out of your medications, not necessarily being out of things that you use every day.  There’s not a reason to have really large amounts of stuff,” Cerniglia says.

She says calling the coronavirus spread a “pandemic” describes a new type of illness that is circulating and has the potential to spread very quickly because we don’t have an immunity to it.
