algal blooms

Climate change continues to impact the Great Lakes.  We’re at record high water levels, and the water temperatures are also on the rise.  It is changing shorelines, habitats, and the well-being of wildlife.  On WEMU’s "1st Friday Focus on the Environment," WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director Lisa Wozniak explore the ramifications, impacts, and work being done to address these issues with Joel Brammeier, President and CEO of the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, are areas where livestock are kept and fed indoors.  One cow will produce 20 times the waste as a human and large-scale operations have thousands of these animals.  The liquified waste is kept in pools, sprayed on the land, and ultimately runs off into the waters.  That contributes to phospherous overload and the development of algal blooms.  Pam Taylor is a Research Coordinator for the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of South-Central Michigan (ECCSCM) and discusses the issues and work toward better practices with WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director Lisa Wozniak in this month's "1st Friday Focus on the Environment."

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has released a new report regarding how climate change may affect the health of Michiganders.  Juanita Constible, Senior Advocate for the NRDC's Climate and Health, Climate & Clean Energy Program, presents details on this report with WEMU's David Fair in this week's "Issues of the Environment."

Warmer temperatures may lead to even bigger algal blooms on Lake Erie this summer. Meantime, Flint, MI is still without a safe water supply, three years after lead contamination was discovered.  WEMU's David Fair gets the latest on those issues in his conversation with Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.
