Protecting Michigan's drinking water has becoming even more of a priority in the past year.  However, during the Michigan Legislature's lame-duck session, former Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a measure making protection more difficult. In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks about this legislation, and its impacts, with Bonnifer Ballard, executive director of the American Water Works Association's Michigan section.

Detectable levels of PFAS and PFOS chemicals are in the Ann Arbor municipal drinking water.  Progress was made in 2018, and more is expected in the new year.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair discusses next steps with Brian Steglitz, manager of the City of Ann Arbor's Water Treatment Services unit.

Ann Arbor is investing nearly one million dollars in technology aimed at removing toxic chemicals found from its source of drinking water.  PFAS contamnation of the Huron River has led to "Do Not Eat Fish" advisories.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks about Ann Arbor's plan to improve its drinking water Brian Steglitz, the manager of the Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant.

PFAS contamination of Michigan waters is growing.  It has forced a “Do Not Eat Fish” advisory for the Huron River and has been discovered in the Ann Arbor Municipal Drinking water supply.  More new contamination sites are being discovered throughout Michigan and the rest of the country.  WEMU has been exploring what is being done at the local and state levels over the past few weeks.  In this month’s “1st Friday Focus on the Environment,” David Fair and Lisa Wozniak of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters explore what is being done at the federal level with Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

A Rover Pipeline protest will take place tonight.  Opponents of the planned location of the natural gas pipeline that would be built near a children’s camp are crying foul on how the plan fell into place and are demanding changes.

The city of Ann Arbor has released its annual drinking water quality report.  Brian Steglitz is the manager of water treatment services for the city.  He says they continue to meet or exceed all state and federal regulatory requirements.  There is no issue with lead in Ann Arbor's drinking water like there is in Flint.

When people hear about "water problems" they're paying very close attention these days especially in light of what is going on in Flint.

Ann Arbor City officials just announced a major sewer overload situation that spilled hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage into a tributary of the Huron River.

I spoke with the city's water quality manager Jennifer Lawson about what happened...

Ann Arbor residents could soon see utility rates increase.

Ann Arbor City Council has approved the sale of bonds to help maintain a pair of pump stations key to the city's drinking water system.

As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, council last night agreed to sell  up to $31. million in  bonds to pay for system upgrades.
