A recent survey determined that there are approximately 150 species in Washtenaw County listed as threatened or endangered.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks to Brian Klatt, director of the Michigan Natural Features Inventory, about why these plants and animals are in danger and what needs to be done to protect them.

It is Earth Day, and there's no better way to celebrate than volunteering your time to make our planet a little more eco-friendly.  In this week's "Washtenaw United," WEMU's David Fair talks to the Huron River Watershed Council's Jason Frenzel and Amanda Reel of the United Way of Washtenaw County about the importance of volunteerism.

Everyone wants clean water and clean air, and most agree that human life is dependent on a healthy planet. In this segment of WEMU’s “The Green Room,” we hear about the beginning of the Earth Day movement in Ann Arbor.  And we explore possible reasons for the current lack of progress on environmental issues, nationally.

Due to a lack of government oversight, toxic chemicals have become much more prevalent in our daily lives.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks to EMU professor and Ann Arbor nutritionist Cindy Klement about ways to manage these toxins before any serious damage can be done.

The theme of Earth Day 2018 is End Plastic Pollution.  Earth Day comes up this Sunday, April 22nd.  To coincide with the theme, 'Issues of the Environment' focuses on an upcoming initiative in Ann Arbor aimed at reducing plastic waste that typically does not end up in the recycling stream.  Packaging expert and consultant Todd Bukowski discusses the program and what the public will need to know to make it work.

Whether you realize it or not, science plays a big part in our everyday lives.  To help raise awareness and ensure scientific research continues to be publicly-funded, communities across the country, including several in Washtenaw County, are holding “Marches for Science” on April 22nd.

Lisa Barry spoke with two Eastern Michigan University professors, Dr. Amy Flanagan-Johnson who teaches chemistry, and Dr. Katherine Ryker who teaches Earth Science, about the need to march.

This Saturday, April 22nd is officially "Earth Day."  But the Ann Arbor Earth Day Festival is taking place on Sunday, April 23rd at the Leslie Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor.

89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry recently visited Leslie and learned about the plans for the festival and spoke to a number of kid day campers who shared great knowledge about the environment and the benefits of Earth Day.

State lawmakers want to make sure your city won’t tax or ban plastic grocery and retail bags.

Washtenaw County's "eco-fee" for using plastic or paper bags from retail grocery stores is scheduled to go into effect on Earth Day in 2017. In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks to Washtenaw County solid waste specialist Noelle Bowman about the new ordinance and whether state lawmakers will actually allow for its implementation.

Washtenaw County is planning to regulate the use of single use, plastic bags.  However, the Michigan State Legislature has slowed the process of passing this measure.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's Patrick Campion speaks with Washtenaw County Commissioner Yousef Rabhi about the controversy surrounding the proposed ordinance.

Editor's note: Wednesday evening, the Washtenaw County commissioners  voted 6-2 to approve a new carryout bag ordinance that would put a 10-cent "tax" on customers for every single use (paper or plastic) bag they receive at stores in Washtenaw county. Stay tuned for follow-up discussion on the issue.

It's Earth Day, and there's a Climate Action Rally happening this afternoon on the University of Michigan campus.

Michigan Clean Water Action, Ann Arbor 350 and organizing for Action-Michigan are hosting the rally.

Clean Water Action Campaigns Director Eric Keller says it's one of many events taking place across the state today.

"People are coming together as individuals and communities to act on climate," Keller says, "and to protect everything that the earth has to offer, and to protect the Great Lakes today."
