A University of Michigan emergency alert Wednesdat morning about a gunman on campus turned out to be a pair of Reserve Officer Training Corps members.  UM police are taking several steps in light of the incident.

Zingerman' Co-founder Honored With 'Champions Of Change' Award  

The White House today will honor Paul Saginaw at a ceremony in Washington. he is among those being recognized with a 'Champions of Change' award.

Saginaw is co-founder of the Zingerman's community of businesses. During a visit to Ann Arbor in April, President Barack Obama praised Saginaw for paying his restaurant workers above minimum wage.

Iconic Rock and Blues guitar slinger Johnny Winter has passed away while touring in Europe. 

Johnny Dawson Winter III has passed away. He was 70. ”Texas blues icon Johnny Winter has passed away on July 16th, 2014, in his hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland,” read an official email from Winter’s PR company, Kid Logic Media. “His Wife, family and band-mates are all saddened by the loss of one of the world’s finest guitarists.”

The email promised an official statement at the appropriate time.

The grand-opening of Ann Arbor's new skatepark is a month away, but news that skating legend Tony Hawk will be at the opening has the skating community freaking out.  President of the Friends of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Trevor Staples says Hawk and several other professional skateboarders will give demonstrations as part of the opening event.

Ice still covers over 20 percent of the Great Lakes surface, following a winter that nearly saw records set for the total amount of ice coverage.  As one would expect Lake Superior leads the way with about 41 percent ice coverage, but even Lake Huron was still one-quarter ice covered this week.  

  

Michigan Public Radio Network

The state's defense of Michigan's same-sex marriage ban got off to a rocky start Monday.

Federal Judge Bernard Friedman tossed out the state's first witness in the case. He said Yale law student Sherif Girgis did not qualify as an expert witness. The plaintiffs' attorneys pointed to the fact that Girgis is still a student, and said he would only be expressing his opinion on gay marriage - not actual evidence. 

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will headline next year's Thunder over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport. 

Yankee Air Museum Public Relations Director Bob Hynes says the show is scheduled for August 9th and 10th.
