Enrollment at many of Michigan's public universities is down.

Eastern Michigan University entered into an agreement with Academic Partnerships last November to market "online only" degree programs.  Since then, the contract and its possible ramifications on the students and teaching staff at EMU have become the source of a large amount of scrutiny.  The issues raised by faculty and lecturers' unions on campus (and at the center of an ongoing arbitration) have recently garnered national attention as they embark on an ad campaign geared towards a "pause" in the agreement.  WEMU will offer ongoing coverage of the issue and revealed, this morning, that we are working on a comprehensive "special report" on the matter.

There are a lot of anxious graduate students at universities around the country right now.

That's because to help pay for more than $1 trillion in tax cuts for U.S. corporations, the House Republican tax plan would raise taxes on grad students in a very big way. These students make very little money to begin with. And many would have to pay about half of their modest student stipends in taxes.

Going to college today is a very different experience than it once was. The cost has soared, and the great recession cut into many of the assets that were supposed to pay for it. This week, All Things Considered is talking with young people — and in some cases their parents — about the value of school and about their choice of what kind of college to attend.

Years of effort to bring more students to Washtenaw Community College are starting to pay off.

WCC is reporting an increase of 2 percent in the number of students attending class fall.

It is one of only five community colleges in Michigan to report increasing enrollment for the upcoming semester.

Linda Blakey is WCC's Vice President of Student and Academic Services. She says multiple demographics are seeing a rise in enrollment.
