Governor Rick Snyder has said that the 300 or so same-sex marriages performed in Michigan back in March are void.  Local marriage equality supporters are not happy.

Sandi Smith is President of the Jim Toy Community Center.

She says they held a community meeting Sunday night where about 50 people gathered to talk about the situation.

"It really throws them into chaos," Smith says, "and I think that the Governor ought to consider that before making sweeping statements."

The legal team for April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse filed its appeal Monday with the US Supreme Court. They want the court to rule that Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage and others like it across the country are unconstitutional.

Local marriage equality advocates are gearing up for a petition drive.  The action follows Thursday's federal appeals court decision to uphold anti-gay marriage laws in Michigan and three other states.

Sanndi Smith is Board President of Ann Arbor's Jim Toy LGBT Community Center.  She says the court's decision is devastating to the LGBT community.

As more states join the list of those where same-sex marriage is legal, an appeal of the overturning of Michigan's ban on gay and lesbian unions remains under consideration in the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Local reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court declining to consider appeals from five states seeking to prohibit same-sex marriage comes from Sandi Smith, Board President of the Jim Toy Community Center.

Smith says while Monday's order doesn't specifically impact Michigan, it is good news.

Status of same-sex marriage in MI still awaiting 6th Circuit decision

The US Supreme Court has declined to hear seven same-sex marriage cases. And that leaves the fate of Michigan's same-sex marriage ban with the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In Cincinnati today, the U-S Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments on same-sex marriage bans in Michigan and three other states.

Oral arguments have been officially scheduled by a federal appeals court about Michigan's dispute over gay marriage.

Ypsilanti City Council has adopted a resolution authorizing a "friend of the court" brief to be filed on the city's behalf in the DeBoer versus Snyder case that seeks to overturn Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage, and it appears city residents approve.

Kim Brown says she doesn't discriminate.

"Because you don't want anybody looking at you and judging you on something different that you do," she said.

Ray Sweeney applauds council's action.

"I support it, so the more the merrier. If we can get more people on board, I'm for that."

The Michigan governor's office says state agencies won't immediately recognize hundreds of same-sex marriages that were performed in the hours before an appeals court put on hold a judge's ruling that tossed out a state ban on gay marriage.
