The November general election is getting closer, and more events are coming up to highlight the upcoming ballot.  Judicial races, affordable housing, and voter registration info are just some of topics discussed in this week's "Civic Matters" with WEMU's David Fair and the CivCity Initiative's Mary Morgan.

Washtenaw County resident and politician Alma Wheeler-Smith has dedicated most of her life to helping others.  She has served the community in many roles:  school board member, county commissioner, state representative and state senator. Wheeler-Smith even declared candidacy for governor in 2010, but decided to end the campaign to prevent a split, progressive  vote in the Democratic primary.  WEMU’s Jorge Avellan made occasion to meet with Alma Wheeler-Smith at the county administration building in Ann Arbor.

The day is here!  The polls are now open and will remain open until 8 o'clock tonight as voters decide the future of the country and many other local issues.

Voters in Washtenaw and three other counties will decide the Regional Transit Authority proposal  that, if approved, would create a mass transit system in Southeast Michigan.  Their goal is to make the region more connected and accessible. Whether that is of benefit to local businesses is a matter of opinion.

In less than a week, Scio Township voters will decide if they will approve a millage that would expand public bus service in that area.

Ann Arbor City Council got an update on a variety of public transportation projects at last night's work session.  As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, current progress could result in less traffic along the I-94 corridor and increased options in all five of Ann Arbor's wards.

The new Regional Transit Authority that aims to link Washtenaw County with Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb  counties, now has a CEO.  The RTA board met Wednesday in Ann Arbor. As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports,  the board approved a contract with the current CEO of SMART, John Hertel.
