This week for "On the Ground Ypsi,"  Lisa Barry and Sarah Rigg talk with a 14-year old member of the Ypsilanti District Library Teen Advisory Group about a recent grant that allowed them to expand information being handed out to local teenagers.

Sometimes, getting teenagers to share what is on their minds is not that easy.  But in this week's "On The Ground Ypsi," Lisa Barry and Sarah Rigg talk with Gail Wolkoff, executive director of "Educate Youth" in Ypsilanti, about a book of poetry written by local students.  The students were encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings about the pandemic and other world events in poetry, which was put together as a booklet called "Spiritual Warriors."

The Washtenaw County Health Department will use social media to target teens who may be addicted to or are considering using vaping products.

When parents try to talk to their kids about subjects like drugs, sex, or suicide, the kids may not want to listen.  So, the Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti developed the "Health Ambassadors" program, which uses younger counselors to work with teens on these tough subjects.  In this week's "On the Ground-Ypsi," WEMU's Lisa Barry and Concentrate Media's Sarah Rigg learn all about this program with Corner Health Center behaviorial health coordinator Jen MacLeod and health ambassador Cecilia Aguilar.


Ann Arbor Schools Offer 'Raising Teenagers' Program

Parents and kids can experience a lot of conflict as children become teenagers. Ann Arbor public schools is offering parents the chance to see what’s really going on inside the teenage brain.


Michigan teens would be able to pre-register to vote under a proposal in Lansing.

The measure would allow 16 and 17 year olds to fill out their voter registration paperwork when they get their driver’s licenses. The state would mail their voter cards when they turn 18.
