Every week during the University of Michigan's football season, a group of Ann Arbor women make sure the players get a taste of "home" by baking them cookies.

Known as the "Cookie Ladies," the women bake up an assortment of cookies which are delivered to the team for every home and away game.

I spoke with the lead baker, Ann Arbor resident Penny Griffin.

Varsity football at Ypsilanti Community Schools will now be lead by former University of Michigan running back coach Fred Jackson.

The announcement was made Wednesday by YCS  superintendent Ben Edmondson.

Jackson spent 24 years as an assistant coach at the U of M. He says he wants to raise Ypsilanti’s football program to the level of recognition the district’s basketball program has.

Jackson says,

Joe Tosch

Joe Tosch is a University of Michigan graduate and former employee of the University’s athletic department.  He has since moved to Kansas City and nearly 3 years ago became a father to a baby girl he and his wife Sarah named Ella.  When Ella was around one year old her Mother began noticing some problems with the infant.  After several trips to the doctors it was determined she had a brain tumor called Medulloblastoma. Ella ended up having emergency surgery that removed most of the brain tumor but the cancer had also spread to her spine.  In August of 2014 she went through six rounds of high dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants.  None of the treatments were successful and she passed away on September 14th  2015,  five weeks shy of her 3rd birthday.

That’s the advice of University of Michigan president Dr. Mark Schlissel who spoke to me in his office as he begins his second academic year as the 14th president of the University of Michigan.

Although Football is often on the minds of University of Michigan students and alumni President Mark Schlissel says while athletics is part of their community it is not their mission.

UPDATE: Dave Brandon, U-M Director of Athletics has issued a statement taking joint responsibility for this situation along with head football coach Brady Hoke.

Sports writers for the Michigan Daily newspaper say head football coach Brady Hoke should be fired, and not just because the team has struggled this season.

Ann Arbor's normal game day parking restrictions will be in place on Saturday.  That's because the University of Michigan Mott Spring Football Scrimmage is scheduled for 2 PM.

Parking and vendor operations will be similar to a football Saturday game day in Ann Arbor, with special event no-parking restrictions in effect that day.

Admission to the spring game is free.  Complete details here.
