Detroit Jazz Festival Schedule With Descriptions Of The Acts
The 35th annual Detroit Jazz Festival, which runs Friday through Monday on four downtown stages stretching from Hart Plaza to Cadillac Square, promises to illustrate Parker’s truism at every turn. Among the roughly 65 groups on the bill of the largest free jazz festival in the world are some of the great individualists in jazz — musicians of vast experience who effectively tell their life stories every time they step on the bandstand.
JP Morgan Chase Main Stage 7 p.m. The Bad Plus & Joshua Redman Redman, the festival's artist-in-residence and a fluent contemporary tenor saxophonist who makes it all look easy, makes the first of his three weekend appearances by teaming with the Bad Plus, an acoustic power trio whose eclectic mind-set and taste for adventure promise to push the saxophonist down paths he doesn't often travel - and vice versa.
