When Pat Metheny was 14, he was a jazz guitar prodigy, turning heads on the Kansas City scene by imitating his idol Wes Montgomery. He had it all down - Montgomery's purring tone, his signature octaves, playing with his thumb rather than a pick. Audiences roared their approval, but older musicians gave him the fish-eye.
