Ann Arbor School Board Sets New Budget

By Bob Eccles

Ann Arbor, MI – The Ann Arbor school board has approved a new operating budget totalling 165 million dollars for the 2003-2004 fiscal year. Superintendent George Fornero says the budget was balanced through cost containment and prudent spending. The district will not be laying off any workers.
In other action last night, the school board agreed to a one-year "schools of choice" pilot program at Stone School alternative high school. 20 slots will open for students from other districts this fall.
The board also appointed a new deputy superintendent for instructional services.
Geraldine Middleton is currently the associate superintendent of Charleston County schools in South Carolina. She'll assume her duties in Ann Arbor next month.
