Petition Drive Goes Slowly

By Brian Nemerovski

Washtenaw County, MI – A grass roots effort to challenge Washtenaw County's jail expansion bond initiative still needs about 14-thousand signatures before September 25.
Ypsilanti Township Clerk Brenda Stumbo is an organizer for "Citizens to Save Our Sheriffs". She says the group has collected about a thousand petition signatures so far. The county must have 15-thousand valid signatures on file before sending the matter back to voters in a referendum.
The bond initiative was approved by county commissioners in August. The plan has drawn criticism because it will be paid for by increasing the cost that communities pay for police services from the sheriff's department.
