With about 1,000 artists on hand Ann Arbor's Art Fair gives visitors the chance to check out nearly as many unique art forms. There also are several places where you can see artists at work.
Strolling down East University the usual art fair sounds are suddenly punctured with a different noise, the pounding of hammers on metal.
That's Janice Degen of the Michigan Silversmith Guild. Degen sits behind a small wooden table with a a variety of strands of metal and tools scattered in front of the metal plate where she carefully holds the piece she's working on with one hand. The hammer in her other hand twisting and turning metal with every whack. She says, "It's a good way to get out your aggressions."
Degen explains silversmithing includes a lot of different techniques, "There's all different ways to texture metal. It's hammering, different types of hammers and textures. Right now I'm doing punches, and letter punches."
Degen thinks the Art Fair is great because even artists that aren't doing demonstrations are available to talk about their work and what new things they're doing.
