The shooting by police of 18 year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri should have us all worried about the expansion and militarization of law enforcement. That's the position of a University of Michigan student group that's holding a public meeting Thursday night.
The International Youth and Students for Social Equality wants to examine the fundamental political questions raised by the shooting of the un-armed black teen.
Andre Damon is National Secretary of the organization, and he'll speak at the meeting.
He says figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that between 1999 and 2011, more than 5,000 people were shot and killed by police.
"3,500 of those people were white, and 1,463 were black," Damon says. "So this is a question that affects people of every race."
Damon says the working class needs to unite across racial and ethnic boundaries to fight for social equality. A strategy for doing that will be discussed at tonight's meeting, which begins at seven at the Michigan League.
