Ypsilanti Couple Meets Dispatcher Who Helped Save Woman's Life

Huron Valley Ambulance

Bobby Grams of Ypsilanti learned the value of dialing 9-1-1 in a health emergency first-hand last month.  Grams found his wife, Karen, lying on the flood of their home, not breathing and without a pulse, and dialed 9-1-1.

Listen to the 9-1-1 tape here.

The call went to Huron Valley Ambulance dispatcher Tim Wilson, who guided Grams through chest compressions.

Thanks to the efforts of Wilson, Bobby Grams and first responders, Karen Grams has since made a remarkable recovery.  In fact she was able to meet Wilson last week.

"How do you thank someone who literally saved your life?" she asks.  "It was just great meeting him, and I couldn't thank him enough, as well as the other responders."

Bobby Grams says the incident taught him how important it is to call 9-1-1 in an emergency and listen to the directions on the other end.

"Concentrating on what Tim told me to do is really what helped everything out," Grams says. "It's just important that people listen to 'em and block everything else out."

HVA dispatcher Tim Wilson says in his job, you generally have no idea what happens after the call ends.

"To actually see and meet somebody, it's pretty touching," says Wilson. "And they're just two very lovely people, and they were really nice to meet."

Karen Grams doesn't remember anything about the incident.  She's under doctor's orders to take it easy for a while, but she says she feels great, and blessed to have had her husband, Tim Wilson and the other first responders on her side.
