Longtime Ann Arbor Resident David Dow 'Spooner' Carter Dies

Susan K. Campbell/ Humans of Ann Arbor

A beloved member of the downtown Ann Arbor community has passed away.

David Dow "Spooner" Carter was known for his handmade multicolored crocheted outfits.

Susan Campbell created the photoblog Humans of Ann Arbor. She says, "Spooner was this bright, colorful guy who just made you smile when you saw him.”

Campbell says Carter was at nearly every art fair and music festival in the city. She thinks his passing is a loss for the character of downtown Ann Arbor.

“[All the Facebook comments I've received] made me realize even more what a big impact someone like Spooner made on the city. I think we walk around and we see these interesting people, but we don’t realize what an [effect] they had on how of the city feels.”

Carter passed away on January 8. His family has set up a gofundme site for help with medical and funeral expenses.
