Civic Matters: National Voter Registration Day, Transit Issues, And More

Every Monday morning, the executive director of the CivCity Initiative joins WEMU's David Fair for a conversation on topics pertinent to Washtenaw County and the city of Ann Arbor.  Mary Morgan will provide news, analysis, commentary and explain the various ways residents can become more engaged.

Mary Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the airwaves.  While heading up the CivCity Initiative now, Mary was previously co-founder and publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle.  Prior to that, she served as a reporter and editor for the Ann Arbor News when it was a daily, print-edition newspaper.

* Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day – two weeks before the Oct. 10 deadline to register if you want to vote on Nov. 7. As part of that effort, UM's Turn Up, Turnout group will be registering students (and anyone else) on the Diag. Find out your registration status and how to register at Michigan.gov/vote. Learn more about local candidates and ballot proposals on AnnArborVotes.org.

• Related to the election, the League of Women Voters is seeking input on what questions they should ask of Ann Arbor City Council candidates at their Oct. 3 candidate forum. Email your suggestions to questions@lwvannarbor.org by Friday, Sept. 29.

• The city is seeking feedback on a draft environmental assessment for a possible new train station in Ann Arbor. The deadline to submit comments on the (brace yourself) 212-page document is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2. The environmental analysis focuses on two sites – at the train station's current location on Depot Street, and at a site on Fuller Road closer to the UM medical complex. More info is on the city's Ann Arbor Station website.

• Speaking of transit, several public entities have partnered on a project called In Transit, a transportation-themed art exhibit in locations throughout the community. The project highlights photography by Washtenaw Community College students. Their work is on display through September at the Ann Arbor Art Center (117 W. Liberty). Photographs will also be featured in all public buses operated by TheRide, as well as Ann Arbor City Hall (301 E. Huron) and The Session Room (3685 Jackson Road).

• Continuing with the transit theme, the board of the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority – which oversees The Ride, our area's public transit system – meets on Thursday, Sept. 28. Their agenda includes a vote on the FY2018 budget. Here's the full agenda.
