Helping local agencies find and repair potholes, joining the Ann Arbor Citizens Academy or attending a town hall on education. Those are a few of the engagement opportunities you have this week and those are among the topics covered by WEMU's David Fair and the CivCity Initiative's Mary Morgan on this week's edition of "Civic Matters."
Mary Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the airwaves. While heading up the CivCity Initiative now, Mary was previously co-founder and publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle. Prior to that, she served as a reporter and editor for the Ann Arbor News when it was a daily, print-edition newspaper.

Warmer weather means it's pothole season – so it's time for a refresher on how to report potholes for repair. Depending on where you see the road crater, report it to the City of Ann Arbor, the Washtenaw County Road Commission, or the Michigan Dept. of Transportation. If you'd rather get off the roads, this week you can find out about plans to expand the county's Border-to-Border Trail. A public forum on Wednesday, Feb. 28 focuses on a new stretch that roughly parallels M-52 from the roundabout at Werkner Road to the Green Lake Campground access road – about 2.6 miles. Here's another sign of spring: Volunteer training to help monitor salamanders, frogs and toads in Ann Arbor's nature areas. The sessions to kick off this season are on Saturday, March 3. Click here and here for details. Register by March 1.
The new Ann Arbor Citizens Academy also launches this spring, and the deadline to apply is Friday, March 2. During six sessions from March through May, residents can learn about how the city works – its parks, planning, public works, police & fire services and more. Click here for details.
Several other civic events are happening this week, including an Education Town Hall tonight (Mon. 2/26) hosted by State Rep. Donna Lasinski (District 52). It will be held at the Dexter District Library, 3255 Alpine St. And, the League of Women Voters is hosting a Brews & Views on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at HOMES Brewery, 2321 Jackson Ave. starting at 7:30 p.m. The topic is community-guided voter registration planning.
