Focus On EMU: Digital Divas Returns To Inspire Young Women

Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University's "Digital Divas" event returns to the EMU campus Friday, 04/12/2019.  Patrick Campion sat down with Bia Hamed, event coordinator, to talk about the history of the event, its impacts on our community, and why EMU and its partners believe this work is so important.

Info about the event from EMU:

The College of Technology believes recruiting and supporting the young women the U.S. needs in the fast-growing technology and computer science fields requires strong commitment, leadership and coordinated efforts from educators, relevant organizations and the business community.

Motivated by this commitment, former professor for the College of Technology, Gerald "Skip" Lawver founded the Digital Divas conference.  Digital Divas' goal is to connect young women to opportunities in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). This one-day conference encourages and engages female middle and high school students in technology careers while giving them an opportunity to meet and network with professors and students. Beginning with under 100 attendees, the Digital Divas conference has grown to over 1000 each year.  Over 6,000 girls from Southeast Michigan have attended a Digital Divas program.
