Clearing Up Some Of The Confusion About Wearing A Mask In Public During A Pandemic

Dr. Beverly Mihalko

Even though Michigan's "stay home, stay safe" order has been extended to May 28th due to the coronavirus pandemic. more people are going out, and many places they visit require wearing a mask.  WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Eastern Michigan University professor and epidemiologist Dr. Beverly Mihalko about what's the best type of mask to make or wear and talks about proper placement and removal of a mask to provide optimal protection.

As more and more people venture out during the coronavirus pandemic a lot of businesses are requiring that a mask be worn.  But figuring out what kind of mask or what works best can be confusing.

Eastern Michigan University professor and epidemiologist Dr. Beverly Mihalko  says a homemademask is fine as long as it is made with two layers of quality, 100% cotton fabric, like quilters, cotton, or flannel ...and worn properly!

Mihalko says she "saw several people, including people working in the store wearing it below their nose.  She adds, "You need to have the mask cover both your nose and your mouth, and it should be fitting fairly firmly."

Mihalko says it’s also important to wash your mask with soap once it’s worn in public and should be removed by the side straps and not touching the front of it.
