Side effects from taking medication outweighs its benefits for some patients with type 2 diabetes.

A new report from the University of Michigan has found insulin and other medications cause more harm than good for low-risk patients, especially those over the age of 50.

Study author Dr. Sandeep Vijan says many of these medications can lead to weight gain and other problems.

"It's not necessarily that you take a drug and you have some side effect that's going to kill you or have some major consequence, so much as there's a lot of...hassles from having to take the medications all the time, but also some things that are going to be bothersome to people," Dr. Vijan says.

Vijan says these concerns only apply to low-risk patients, and medication is still essential for those likely to suffer from diabetes-related complications.
