The University of Michigan is expanding its partnership with the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office. Starting October 1, the university will start managing all of the office's operations.

The new partnership will last three years, and is worth $16.7 million.

The two organizations have been working together since 2011.

Dr. Carl Schmidt is the Chief Medical Examiner for Wayne County. He says there are some advantages to being operated by the university.

"The ability to purchase consumables at a lower price, the economies of scale that the university can provide, this is going to be the more significant impact as far as cost savings goes in particular,” Dr. Schmidt says.

He  says many of the office's employees were already working for U-M due to a previous deal so this change should not affect service.
