For many, a holiday meal could bring a little bit of cheer.

A variety of Washtenaw County agencies are working to make sure everyone has a good holiday meal this week. Officials with Food Gatherers say many of their over-100 partner organizations are ensuring there is an opportunity for those in need to celebrate the holiday season.

Food Gatherers Chief Operating Officer, Missy Orge, says the holiday season doesn't create a spike in demand for meals, but a special holiday meal is still important. Orge asserted "there's a lot of emotion around food" this time of year, and the holidays "are times where a lot of people are thinking of family and fellowship, getting together and celebrating."

Food Gatherers Community Kitchen will serve holiday meals at the Delonis Homeless Shelter at 3 P.M., both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
