A state legislator from Washtenaw County is advocating a revisit of the emergency manager lawafter Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager DarnellEarley’s resignation announcement Tuesday morning.
54th District State Representative David Rutledgesays Earley’s resignation is the latest event to renew criticism of the emergency manager law in Michigan. The Superior township Democrat says no legislation has been scheduled, but it is in the works, “One bill by Representative LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit) ...would be a full repeal of the EM law.”
Rutledge says the majority of Michigan residents never supported passing the law.
“The interesting thing about looking at the whole emergency manager situation is, in my opinion, when we forget about our democratic principles it always leads to trouble.”
Earley will step down as DPSemergency manager at the end of the month.
