UPDATE:  US-23 AT 8 MILE IS NOW OPEN IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

Many commuters north of Ann Arbor are dealing with a new traffic headache today. Northbound US 23 at 8 Mile Road is closed indefinitely.

A crash involving a semi-truck severely damaged the bridge crossing the freeway Thursday morning. MDOT says US-23 will remain closed for safety concerns until the 8 mile road bridge is removed.

“We would strongly urge any commuters, motorists traveling through that area today to find an alternate route. We expect severe backups in the area,” says MDOT spokesperson Kari Arend

Arend says US-23 will be closed through the weekend.
