Congresswoman Debbie Dingell made an impassioned speech for gun control legislation during a sit-in at the U.S. House Thursday morning.
House Democrats staged a25 hour sit-in at the Capitol to demand a vote on gun control legislation. During the protest, Dingell spoke to fellow Congress members about her own experience with gun violence.
“...and we still live in a society where we will let a convicted felon who is stalking somebody of domestic abuse, still own a gun."
In an interview with WEMU, she says now is the time for action to limit incidents of gun violence.
“I think that people are tired of seeing horrific scenes. I think people like myself are worried about the level of violence that is considered normal in this country, and that they’re finding a way to try to bring people together to have [this] conversation.”
Dingell says the sit-in and her speech have received more attention than she expected. House Democrats used Twitter and streaming video appsto broadcast the protest online after a live C-SPAN feed was cut off by House Speaker Paul Ryan.
