Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has joined a lawsuit filed by 10 states challenging afederal rule that says schools must respect the self-declared gender identity of students. That includes allowing transgender students to choose which restrooms and locker rooms they will use.
Andrea Bitelyis the attorney general’s press secretary. She says the rule ignores the wishes of parents of transgender students, as well as schools and Congress, which never adopted a law.
“This directive by the President omitted participation by local schools and bypassed Congress’s constitutional responsibilities.”
The administration says it’s simply interpreting federal Title IX rules as courts have allowed. The state Board of Education is also embroiled in a controversy over developing voluntary guidelineson how Michigan schools can help ensure an accepting environment for transgender students.
