A planned unit development approved last night by Ypsilanti City Council on first reading could be a deal-breaker for the Family Dollar store project in the Water Street Re-Development Area. Despite warnings from the developer that Family Dollar requires a so-called monument sign be built on the property, the PUD approved by council was amended to remove a provision to allow such a sign. The question of the sign wasn't a major issue for Mayor Pro-Tem Lois Richardson.
Councilmember Daniel Vogt argued that the sign didn't fit the city's vision for Water Street as an urban, rather than suburban, development. He said the building will already have signs on three sides, so a monument sign wasn't necessary. The planned unit development ordinance will likely be back before council for a second and final reading at its next meeting.
