The new open enrollment period for Michigan's Health Insurance Marketplacehas begun, and efforts in Washtenaw County are off to a good start.

Krista Nordberg is Washtenaw Public Health's Director of Enrollment and Advocacy Services.

She says they've been extremely busy.

"People are liking the new plans offered on the marketplace," Nordberg says, "and the enrollment system is working, and the call center has been overall timely and pleasant."

Nordberg says they've mostly been helping new people to enroll in the marketplace, but they're also assisting those with coverage to renew it.

Those seeking coverage must enroll by February. Under the Affordable Care Act, those who fail to acquire some form of health insurance will have to pay a fine of $325 or 2 percent of their income, whichever is higher.
