Organizations across Washtenaw County encouraged people to get tested for HIV Monday for World AIDS Day.
The number of new HIV cases grew sharply in the county last year, reaching a 15-year high.
Jimena Loveluck is the president of the HIV/AIDS Resource Center.
She says it's incredibly important to get tested and know your HIV status.
"There are still about 14 percent of people living with HIV in the United States that don't know they're infected," Loveluck says. "If you don't know that you're infected you're not getting the medical care and treatment that you need, and that will help you lead a long and healthier life."
Loveluck says the majority of new cases are being reported among adults age 30 and younger.
