Washtenaw County health officials are encouraging residents who haven’t gotten a flu vaccine to do so before the year is over.

The highest rates of flu cases in Washtenaw happened last year after the holidays, according to the county health department’s Susan Cerniglia.

“Flu illness rates locally are pretty low [currently]. It’s what we call sporadic. But even though we don’t know what the full season will look like, we do know that the highest rates of illness tend to start in late December.”

More than 300 people in Washtenaw County were hospitalized during the 2014-2015 flu season. Cerniglia says the Washtenaw County Health Departmentoffers low cost flu vaccines to all county residents, regardless of income.
