You may have noticed the polls were more crowded than usual yesterday. Turnout in Washtenaw Countywas much higher than expected.
The county has almost 268,000 registered voters. Nearly 107,000cast a vote yesterday, putting turnout just a hair shy of 40%.
According to the county elections director, typical turnout for presidential primary elections is 15-20%. Ed Golembiewski did anticipate that the list of candidates would generate bigger interest than that, but certainly not 40%.
Earlier this week, he told WEMU he thought turnout would be between 30-35%.
