There are a few extra days to get your income taxes filed this year. Instead of the traditional April 15th, you have until midnight Monday, April 18th to file your personal tax returns.
Melena Cummings owns TaxCo Solutions in Plymouth. She says a lot of people probably aren't aware of the delay, which is due this year to federal workers having the 15th off in observation of a holiday only celebrated in Washington, D.C. Cummings says tax preparation changes every year.
"One of the biggest changes that we've had within the last two years has to do with the health insurance and making sure that the taxpayer is compliant with health insurance. So, there's been additional forms added, and there's been additional checks that, as a preparer, that we have to do."
Cummings says it's pretty evenly divided between those who get a refund and those who need to pay more. If you are getting a refund, she recommends you request it be direct deposited and says, if you do, you should get your money in about ten business days versus a three to four week wait to have it mailed to you.
She also advises if you owe money to the government and want to file anextension, at least make some sort of payment before the tax filing deadline, which is midnight Monday.
