A team from the University of Michigan lead the recovery of a nearly complete "ice age"mastodon from Michigan's thumb area.

University of Michigan paleontologist Daniel Fisher (with his left hand on the mastodon skull) and his crew, which included several Tuscola County teachers. The dig took place on property owned by the Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning, about 5 miles north of Mayville in Michigan’s Thumb region.

Between 60 to 70 percent of the mastodon skeleton was recovered during a four-day dig near Mayvillle.

Fisher said this is the most complete Michigan mastodon skeleton that has been discovered in many decades.
