Black Friday continues to play a big role in our local economy.  But another shopping day is also becoming very popular.

The national campaign "Small Business Saturday" encourages residents to shop at independent retailers on November 26th.  That includes businesses right here in Washtenaw County.

Andy LaBarre is the Executive Vice President and Director of Government Relations for the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber.  He says more businesses in our county have switched from Black Friday to Saturday.

"They did not want to do that to their employees, and that's there's sort of a push back to value employees' time differently and allow them to have a holiday."

It's estimated that, nationally, $14.3 billion are spent at independent businesses on Small Business Saturday.
