Traffic safety was the focus of a communtiy meeting held last night by the New West Willow Neighborhood Associationin Ypsilanti Township. 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan attended the meeting and has the story.
Over twenty concerned residents and local leaders packed a small gathering room at the association's headquarters on Tyler Road. That's one of the roads the group says has seen an increase in traffic since the American Center for Mobility opened at Willow Run. A section of U.S. 12 was redesigned to accomodate autonomous vehicle testing.
Jo Ann McCollum is the president of the association. She says before the change, fifty-three hundred vehicles passed through Dorset Avenue on a daily basis.
"After the roads were changed, now it's 5,624 cars going down Dorset"
McCollum says the association was unhappy with the numbers before the change and while they welcome the center, they want the Washtenaw County Road Commission to address the issue. The commission was invited but did not attend the meeting.
