Ypsilanti officials have declared a local state of emergency.

The declaration comes in response to new data from the Washtenaw Health Departmentthat shows the community has some of the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases in the county.

Nearly 6,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed within the city’s two zip codes, according to the latest figures from the health department.

Lois Richardson is Ypsilanti’s mayor.

“We felt that it was something that needed to be done for the health and welfare and good of the people, our citizens."

Mayor Richardson says the declaration will allow the city to continue to conduct public meetings virtually, which will help slow the spread of COVID-19.
