As you do your holiday driving, Michigan State Police want you to remember the state’s so-called “move over law.”
More than 1.6 million Michiganders will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday. That’s according to AAA estimates.
That means an increase in officers and first responders on the side of the road.
First Lieutenant Michael Shaw is with the Michigan State Police. He says, on average, an officer is hit by a driver almost every other week.
“We’re more concerned about being run over on the side of the roadway or on the side of the freeway than we are actually about being shot in the line of duty.”
The move over law means, if you see a first responder vehicle or tow truck on the side of the road, you need to move over a lane. If you can’t, slow down and drive carefully past the scene.
