An Eastern Michigan University professor has received national recognition for her teaching efforts.

The Council on Undergraduate Research awarded Biology Professor Anne Casper an honorable mention for 'superior mentorship of undergraduate students in research.' Casper says mentoring provides students with valuable experience. "If all they're doing is taking classes, they don't have much practical application for understanding why we know things in the sciences, or understanding a lot of the efforts that go into learning the things in those text books," says Casper.

Casper says it really helps students prepare for the next stage of their life, whether it be applying for grad school, medical school or getting a job in a hospital.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
