Thousands and thousands of college students leave Washtenaw County to go back home during the summer.  That change has a local impact.

Local restaurants, bars, and shops have a lot less college student customers during the summer. AndyLaBarre, executive vice-president for theAnn Arbor/YpsilantiRegional Chamber, says labor union events are key during that period, because they bring in $10 million to both cities.  Those funds help replace the economic impact that's usually created by students.

Summer festivals also contribute to the local economy during the summer.
