Members of Ann Arbor’s Muslim community began observing Ramadan this week.
Omar Mohammed is the Outreach Chair for the Muslim Community Association of Ann Arbor. He says there a lot of non-Muslims have misconceptions about what Ramadan is.
“Understanding and trying to learn more about it. A lot of times people have heard of Ramadan, they know that Muslims fast. [People think we can drink water still], but, no, you can’t have anything from dawn till sunset.”
Because Ramadan falls during the summer months this year, fasting will last for more than 15 hours each day. Mohammed says roughly 8,000 people will observe Ramadan in Washtenaw County this year.
