Whether you realize it or not, science plays a big part in our everyday lives. To help raise awareness and ensure scientific research continues to be publicly-funded, communities across the country, including several in Washtenaw County, are holding “Marches for Science” on April 22nd.
Lisa Barry spoke with two Eastern Michigan University professors, Dr. Amy Flanagan-Johnson who teaches chemistry, and Dr. Katherine Ryker who teaches Earth Science, about the need to march.
Dr. Flanagan-Johnson says science is in all of our lives and affects us in ways many people take for granted, whether it’s the clean air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the medications we take to remain healthy.
Dr. Ryker adds that they want to communicate with the public and law makers and show them what their tax dollars are going towards.
“We want to make it clear what’s happening in our labs, what kinds of things we’re finding out and how it shapes and influence the community around us,” Ryker says.
Marches will be taking place Saturday in Ann Arbor andYpsilanti.
